Understanding Complex Sentence Structures

A complex sentence contains an independent clause and one or more dependent clauses. The independent 

clause can stand alone as a complete sentence, while the dependent clause cannot. Dependent clauses are 

introduced by subordinating conjunctions such as "although," "because," "if," and "while."

Example of a complex sentence: 

 

Although I was tired, I stayed up late to finish my work.

In this sentence, "although" is the subordinating conjunction, "I" is the subject, "was tired" is the verb phrase

in the dependent clause, and "stayed up late to finish my work" is the independent clause.

Strategies for Mastering Complex Sentence Structures

1.Identify the main clause and dependent clauses in the sentence. Pay attention to subordinating 

   conjunctions and relative pronouns, which can help you identify dependent clauses.

2.Focus on subject-verb agreement. Make sure the subject and verb agree in number (singular or plural) and 

    tense (past, present, or future).

3.Pay attention to verb tense. Make sure the verb tense matches the intended meaning of the sentence.

4.Read the sentence carefully and try to understand the overall meaning. Don't get bogged down by individual 

   words or phrases.
